Capital’s First Skin donation Done at AIIMS.
ORBO, AIIMS, coordinated the first successful skin donation & harvesting from the deceased in collaboration with the Burns & Plastic Surgery Team and the Forensic Medicine Department. A noble & compassionate act by the family of a 42-year-old female donor from Jaitpur, Delhi, promises to save burn patients’ lives, aid in managing severe burn cases, and reduce the mortality rate. The skin can be harvested from a cadaver within eight to 10 hours of death and is preserved in 85% glycerol and under 4-5 degrees Celsius. The Donated skin will be processed for at least six weeks, so that the receiving patient gets the skin free of any infection. Donated skin can be preserved for five years.
